English, Thursday w. 10 - listening

Well, now I am down with a cold. My plan is to save my super powers for Friday. This way, I will be able to see all my students this week. Whether I am sick or not, You need to get on with your English studies, so you are all to go to school tomorrow morning and conduct our English class together, according to the instructions below.

To avoid ANY confusion: NI SKA GÅ TILL SKOLAN I MORGON OCH HA ENGELSKA TROTS ATT JAG INTE ÄR DÄR OCH TROTS ATT DET INTE FINNS NÅGON VIKARIE. FÖLJ INSTRUKTIONERNA NEDAN.

1. Practical details

Karolina will meet you at 8.30 and open the door for you. She will also help you with any technical details, and she will be on call if you run into difficulties. The class leaders during the lesson, who will help everyone through the steps/instructions below, will be: Jeff and Caroline

NI BEHÖVER INTE LÄSA LÄNGRE ÄN SÅ HÄR INNAN LEKTIONEN SÄTTER IGÅNG I MORGON.

2. The purpose of the lesson and preparations

The purpose of today's lesson is to practise listening. Please, do not look at the video before the lesson, because that will ruin parts of the exercise.

Caroline and Jeff will hook up one of their computors to the projector so that you can watch and listen all together. Ask Karolina for help with this if you need it.

Before you do the different tasks together - read the task all together so that you know what is going to happen!

3. Task One

Look at the first minute of the video clip below all together - WITHOUT SOUND! Afterwards answer the question: based on what you have seen - what do you think the video clip will be about?

Caroline and Jeff will write down key words from your answers on the whiteboard

(Why? Because it is easier to understand if you have some kind of expectations on what you are about to hear)

4. Task Two

You will now get a sheet of paper. On the paper - the whole speech of the video clip is written down, but there are gaps in the text and when you listen to the video clip, you must try to hear what the guy says and fill in the blanks on the the paper with one or more words.

Hand out the answer sheets, listen to the whole video clip all together, with sound, and try to fill in the blank spaces. It is okay if you miss a few.

(Why? Because it is good to create a connection between what we HEAR (someone speaking) and what we SEE (the same words, written down)

5. Task Two - After listening

After doing task two, compare with your desk mate how you have filled in the blanks on the answer sheet. Try to agree on spelling, and grammar details so that your suggestions are as correct as you can make them. This will take about 10-15 minutes.

(Why? By discussing spelling, word and grammar details, you have to motivate choices based on the knowledge you have about language. This activates knowledge that you already have and you learn knew things by discussing your knowledge with someone else)

6. Task Three - Listen again

After comparing and correcting, make sure that all the gaps are filled in. Listen to the video clip (all together) again and make sure that you have made the right choices. When you have done so, compare your answers to the correct version of the text below:

7. Before you leave the classroom

EVERYONE TOGETHER - make sure that the class room is put nicely in order and go out to break. Ann-Sofie will be with you for Swedish class at 10.05 (a bit later than you usually start!)
